For various reasons, men in our countries called "industrialized" lost the skirt in their wardrobe, which was reduced to pants. In 1985, John Paul GAULTIER tried to make it come back but without success. But sometimes, you can see, on the street, on television screens or in the “haute-couture” fashion shows, men in skirts. But what about men in skirt in everyday life ?

Uses are difficult to change:

We  forgot that  men  before, wore skirts, tunics and dresses, and it  is still the case  in some countries. Just open our history books or look on the net information about Indonesia and Scotland for example to see it.. Some would say that this is traditional and therefore held that it is "abnormal" outside those contexts. But a tradition of which era? The pants would never have appeared both among women and among men, if the traditions of our ancestors had been complied with.

We forgot, or have not known for the younger ones, when women did not wearing pants. They had to fight against prejudices and uses of the people to allow women to wear it nowadays, in everyday life and especially at work, without being singled out and with no systematic invention of certain tendencies and sexual perversions against them. It was only about half a century. And despite the lesson drawn from this long difficult struggle, the same mistakes are committed against the wearing of skirts by men, on behalf of the uses of today.

Is the skirt, the woman’s emblem?

Trousers took the monopoly into male’s wardrobe in our countries, and women did not wear it, the skirt has become, over the centuries, and by force of uses, the emblem of women the only ones to wear it. The information system is not as global today; the daily wear of the skirt by men from other countries had little chance of influencing the trend.

As we saw, women have fought to be able to wear trousers and were able to show us that they could remain feminine, even with trousers because it suited them and their morphology. The same is true for men with no feminine stuff on skirts or skirts for men created especially for them.

Skirts for men, the coming back…

We have all seen skirts for men in John Paul GAULTIER.’s fashion shows But it is not the only one.  Now, other haute couture designers create their models: Collections "Fall / Winter 2006-2007"from Vivienne WESTWOOD, "March of montesino", "March Mi" and "Puerto Rico" by Francis MONTESINOS and Men "was 2007" by Agnès B.

We also find fashion designers and stores (some on-line) which sell skirts for men such as Anderslandinger, Sandra KURATLE for the trade mark Amok, Midasclothing, Anne-Caroline Huguenin, Utilikilt with their useful kilts, Missing Sign.

Sometimes, we can see in the medias, men in skirts elsewhere than in films with a story of the past era: Dancers wearing skirt in Kamel OUALI’s choreography, Florian DUBOS musician in Kyo’s band in a   long black skirt, David Beckham in sarong, and so on.

And on the streets, where are these wearers of skirt? They are still few who dare to defy the eyes, and who have a family agreeing to cope with the "what would they say about it? ". Yet these few audacious claim, on the websites on the topic (eg (mosbookmarks: bm = 1), French site dealing with the coming back of the skirt in men’s wardrobe), that most people met while going out wearing a skirt rather have a visible neutral reaction. Their regret is not having dared to enjoy the comfort of the skirt before and not to find models at reasonable prices on the shelves of stores for men. This last point increases gradually the number of holders of skirts, especially during heat waves becoming more frequent.
