Do we really know the origin of our uses? Many people reject others because they do not have the same uses or they invent them thoughts, rudeness, tendencies they haven’t got or that they make fun of them. Here are some examples that I have been sent by mail, uses for which we do not necessarily know the background :
- Do you really know why gallantry imposes to let the ladies walking first? Where does this use, this custom come from?
It comes from Henry the 4.At this time. Killings were not so rare, and one of the favourite places for murderers was a door. The precaution was to let 'gallantly' a woman walking first, for her to take the blow if a murderer was there ... - Why put the hand in front of the mouth while Yawning ? Putting the hand in front of the mouth when yawning was not out of politeness, but just out of fear that the soul escapes ... - Why do we shake hands to say "hello"? It comes from the Middle Age: People shaked hand to say that they were unarmed. - Why Santa Claus is red? Originally he was dressed in green, but Coca-Cola had dressed him in red at the beginning of the last century for an advertising campaign! Nowadays a non gallant man could be treated as "gougeat", a man yawning without putting his hand in front of his mouth would be considered without a lifestyle, we would laugh at someone who is disguised as Santa Claus in Green because "Everyone knows that Santa Claus is red" :-) And for men in skirts is the same thing. We are used to see, in our countries, skirts worn only by women. Therefore, we find it strange to see a man wearing a skirt. And yet, skirts and dresses are worn by men for millennia (Egyptian, Scots, Romans, etc.), and it is still the case in some countries. For the skirt for men to be once again accepted in our country, this will only be a matter of uses. And that is these men, daring to face the prejudices of the people going out wearing a skirt who will give the use. So congratulations and thanks to those who dare.
