The Roman period, the Gothic period and popular garment
1 - The Roman period :
From the XIIth century clothing lengthened. Men still wore the tunic. The one worn below the clothes was called chainse; it was a long tunic with long and narrow sleeves . The bliaud is a short tunic with long sleeves, curved and decorated with lace and embroidery that isworn on top of the chainse.
2 - The Gothic period :
From the thirteenth to the fourteenth century, new clothes appeared, even if the previous are still worn. The coat and surcot were wool tunicswith bright colours. The bold coat is a long tunic adjusted to a full skirt more or less long, which was split on the sides for men.
The sorquerie is a wool tunic on which the chest and sleeves were adjusted.
3 - The popular garment :
The main cloth consisted in a knee length tunic with long sleeves.
