Homme en jupe du 17 ième siècleIn the 17th century among others, in France at Versailles, people from the Court adopted their king's fashion and had to respect the standards of tailors if they didn't want to be ridiculous.

Louis XIV wanted his court to be bright and gentlemen, to live up their monarch, spent their money in ribbons, wigs and others stuff. At the beggining of Louis XIV's reign, rhingrave and justaucorps were favorites garments for men from the court.

The rhingrave was composed of a small rigid skirt with a form of small barrel on which was fixed kind of  baggy pants.  In general,it went till the belt and went on to a very short pourpoint with opened sides sleeves which stopped just before the end of arms. The whole was decorated with multicolored lace ribbons woven with gold and decorated by golden butterflies and birds which were a sign of wealth.

High-heeled shoes and wig allowed men to appear higher.
