We will speak here of the ecclesiastical costume for the Catholic clergy.
The coule :
The ancient casula has evolved in 2 directions: the liturgical chasuble and the monks' garment choir .
The garment choir is a wide chasuble which sleeves were formed by segments sewn. The cap is attached and is called cuculla in Latin. This garment is often wrinkled and worn for thereligious office and community life.
The coule is black for Benedictines and white for Cistercians .
The Douillette :
It is a long overcoat which is used as a costume worn on the soutane.
It comes down to the toes and is closed by buttons.
The douillette is black (except for the Pope who wears it in white.)
The Froc :
It is an ample coat with long sleeves. Monks usedit to go to the religious office.
It is the popular term which refers to the coule.
The soutane :
It comes from the latin word sottana which means " below clothe" It is a long dress, buttoned on the front. It is white for the Pope, red for cardinals, purple for bishops and black for priests.
From the seventeenth century, in France the soutane is imposed on the place of residence (1673).
During the French Revolution, the clericalgarment is deleted.
Nowadays, clergymen wear a sober suit with a shirt topped by a Roman collar that imitates the soutane's one .
The Surplis :
It is a dawn knee- length with wide sleeves. For priests, it must be in linen. Before 1960, it was the choir garment for those who were not priests or deacons.
Since 1984, all those who participate in the liturgy wear a dawn and surplis has almost disappeared.
