Gshubert, un homme en jupe au Colorado, Etats- UnisI am 54 years old, married, live in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA.  I teach computing at the high-school and college level.

  • What kind of skirt do you wear, since when and where ?

I have worn kilts and skirts of various kinds for about the past four years.  I have worn sarongs on vacation in Hawaii.  I occasionally wear kilts to work.  I often wear skirts when I'm "on my own time", relaxing around the house, going shopping, or, like today, hiking in the foothills near town.  I wear mostly knee-length skirts, some a bit shorter, and some longer.  I have a couple of kilts of various tartans, and a couple of modern kilts.  Most of my skirts are solid colors, such as tan, brown, black, and denim blue.  I have some patterned skirts, such as one in forest camo (see the picture hiking08.jpg) or a tropical print.

  • What was your entourage's reaction ?

My wife worked to get the dress code changed in her high school to allow women to wear pants, and she supports my kilt- and skirt-wearing on the principle of fairness.  She helps me get combinations of skirts and other garments that look right.  My children prefer that I don't wear skirts when I'm out with them.  My neighbors don't seem to mind, and I often get compliments when I wear a kilt to work.

  • For you, what is the best style to have, for a man, to make his wearing of a skirt being better accepted ?

The best style to wear is one that feels the most natural and comfortable to the wearer.  If a person is uncomfortable or nervous about their clothes, it shows, and he (or she) can't be their best.  It worked well and was worth it for me to wear a kilt at first. It's a recognizably male garment, so avoids some gender issues. I got used to wearing it; my wife and I were both relieved that there were no adverse reactions from others.  Another nice starting point can be a denim skirt with pockets, belt loops, and a front zip fly that often look quite good on guys.  It may take some time to explore different possibilities, because there are no conventions (yet) to help men with skirt-wearing decisions.

  • All you want to say about skirts for men ?

I wanted to wear more comfortable clothing, more ways to express myself, and the freedom to wear what I liked.  And I enjoyed surprising people who don't think these choices are open to them.  I hope by exercising my fashion freedom I can encourage others who like to expand their range too.
