I tried some on when I was a kid for fancy games and I found it comfortable and it changed from trousers. Then, When I left my parents' house, I only wore skirts at my home, hidding for frightening of prejudges. That's in 2002 when I relly start to wear skirts in public.
JI choose to wear a skirt or trousers depending on the weather, my mood,my activity or without any precises reasons, at home, to go shopping,to go for a walk, to go and vote, to buy my bread, at friends,... For me, trousers = useful and skirt = comfort. I wear skirt more often during summer than during winter. On the other hand, I don't wear skirts neither at work, nor at my parents' village ( see the reason why in the next question).
Caroline, about 30 as well, loves to see me either with a skirt or with a trousers suit. That's by her encouragement I dared going out in public areas for the first time. since that time, she is with me to help me to lead actions for the coming back of the skirt into men's wardrobe. Our children, 2 girls aged 6 and 7, are used to seeing a man in skirt and, as they are not formated yet by the Society who inculcates habits and ideas, find it usual for a man to wear a skirt. Nevertheless, it happens that they question about the differences men/women because their friens affirm that " a man can't have long hairs", " a girl doesn't play with cars"," a boy doesn't wear the pink colour", etc. To sum up the others reactions, the negatives ones are more from the family who is afraid of " what people will say".As far as friends, colleagues and neighbourgs are concerned, relations are still the same, except in some cases. My hairdresser even asks me to come wearing a skirt. I invite you to read my anecdots on this website to go further in details and have examples.
It can happen to hear a negative reaction. However, proportionnally to people I meet when I wear a skirt, it is very few Positives reactions are here too and the neutral ones are the majority. There are certainly reactions I don't see or that people don't say directly.
As all tastes are not the same, obviously the skirts I wear can be liked or disliked. that's the same for everything.
Women who made comments we heard were positives. I will tell you two anecdots to illustrate this :
- In Limoges, Caroline was not very far from a bench where two women were sat and one of them was the cashier of one of the supermarkets of my town. The cashier tells her friend " her husband wears skirts", the other was very surprised and found it ridiculous, the cashier answered her " and it suits him very well".
- On the leaving school of our children, Caroline heard a mother telling another one " she the wife of the one who wears skirts", the second one answered " ah yes, the transvestite !", the first one said " not at all, for him it is very suitable and elegant". To make a precision,a man around my town wears women's clothes from head to feet without being travestite ( no false breast) and we think that the second woman's reaction comes from here.
At the reverse and on the contrary to what could be thought, negatives reactions only came from skirt wearers essentially. They went to talk about " potatoes bag". Indeed, we can see on forums that wearers of skirts are quite intolerant towards those who want to stay masculine wearing a skirt. It's not only a question of tastes, but, by their purposes, a misunderstanding of the limit that masculine wearers of skirts give themselves or of their style voluntary masculine by tastes and choice. Effectively, the firsts ask for a larger freedom than the wearing of a skirt. Some wear high heels and / or nails painted, etc. I respect their choice but they must also respect the choice of those who want to stay male (the male of our days).
That's only a personal opinion : I think a man in a skirt remaining male (the male of today) will be more accepted as a man feminine. My opinion has been confirmed by the talks of people I talked to about my wearing of a skirt.
- History-Geography : Men had always worn skirts, both in the past ( loin cloth in Egypt, tunic by the Romans, etc)than nowadays ( kilt in Scotland, sarong in Indonesia, pareo in Tahiti, etc).A section of this site is dedicated to this. - Men/Women : a man can wear skirts and be virile. Women knew how to show us that they were still women wearing trousers, whereas they couldn't wear it a century ago.
- Freedom : for me, everyone does what he wants, as long as he doesn't hurt anyone. what may hurt someone, is not wearing a particular garment but rejects someone because of what he wears.
The skirt can also bring out the femininity of women than the virility of men . It depends on the style of skirt, what is worn whith it, and behaviour of those who wear it. The skirt is a garment of the man of the past and will be one of his garments of the future. It's the transition between these two periods that will be more difficult and it will be longer or shorter depending on many things such as his ability to know how to fight for his freedom of dress.
