After a small appearance in the Eighties, male skirt is coming back in the processions of haute couture and prêt a porter in Europe, as well in the world of spectacle. In the street however, it is done more discreetly. And this, because! It is still regarded as the emblem of women! And if men agree to low their trousers down, they refuse to lose their virility.

1985. The stylist Jean-Paul Gaultier releases a real bomb in the fashion world by creating wardrobe for two, a collection of clothing including the skirt for man. Unthinkable. Inconceivable. At this time, nobody followed the terrible child of the French mode. However, the idea made s its way gently and today, nearly twenty years later, the designers of the whole world are agree for masculinize this expensive clothing with the women. No flowered rustles, laces or reasons, but of the traditional and purified lines, sober colours and pockets with flies for the functional side… A few stylists present even the skirt for man like impossible to avoid into their collection. On jupe.i-hej.com, French website devoted to the male skirt, we learn that the eccentric Vivienne Westwood integrated clothing in its Autumn collection/winter 2006-2007, which it is also presented in the collections the mar of Montesino, Mi mar and Puerto Rico of Francis Montesinos, and that Agnès B. envisages to include in her collection men be 2007.

Attempt to virility

In the world of the spectacle, in particular that of the musicals; male skirts are also very appreciated. Kamel Ouali, the most known choreographer in the hexagon, does not hesitate for example to make star academicians’ boys dance wearing skirt or long tunic on prime-time shows. As far as the musician Florian Dubos, Kyo group, is concerned, he appears dressed in a long black skirt in the clip” the last dance”. Even the football player David Beckham appears into public in sarong, this long narrow loincloth. But everybody is not david Beckham wants and what is considered as elegant on a sex-symbol can become quite simply ridiculous on an anonymous. The skirt is the prerogative of women and transvestites it is still source of heavy prejudices, which explains why it is so difficult to see skirt into the streets. “The skirt for man is often associated to homosexuality, explains Jerome Salome, the creator of the jupe.i-hej.com site. That is why very few men dare to face the glance of people while wearing this type of clothing. The weight of Society is so important that even the one who wears skirt wonders about his motivations. Before being able to go out in the street, I wondered a long time whether this clothing taste did not hide a driven back homosexuality or a desire to disguise myself as a woman. But discussing with others heterosexuals fond of skirts on forums on Internet sites, I realized that I was not alone to like skirts and that did not question my sexuality». Since about four years, Jerome has worn the skirt proudly, even if he has still to face the laugh and the gibes in the street. “However, reflexions cease themselves, when I walk myself with my wife and my two children, he notices. That is the proof that only homosexuality is targeted. As soon as people become aware of my sexual membership, they are calmed and reassured.” Since a few years, Jerome works hard to democratise the wearing of male skirt, especially talking about his experience in the regional and national press, and by leading various actions through the hexagon. A long and hard job, because this clothe is not particularly accessible. Because although there are some good addresses in Paris and that it is possible to buy on line, the price remains relatively high. “The less expensive skirt is around hundred euros and the average price is around 200 to 300 euros, says this father. As far as I am concerned, I determined myself to look for skirts into women clothing store and buy mixed skirts with more attractive prices.”

Reunion Island is septic

Will it be enough to low the prices of men’s skirt to make them adopt it? If in the hexagon, the professionals of fashion believe in the future of the product, the reunion Island is rather sceptical  “Réunionnais have already difficulties to leave traditional, that will be very difficult to make them wear a skirt, ensure Julie Danielle, designer at Danielle fashion creation.  Men are too machos in reunion Island. Only few marginal will try.” “Perhaps young people will let themselves convince by the skirt, but then it would be necessary that it is very male,” The manager of Technic-couture,an organism which trains girls to the seam, insists for his  part , I would prefer  a divided skirt which would be like  trousers, a bit like a skirt for  samurai for example.” At caramel Bleu, we initially prefer to observe the evolution of the phenomenon before deciding… “Fifteen years ago, we have creates our line of skirts for man, but that did not give anything of conclusive, explains Sylvie, stylist. We tried to hold two years, in vain. However, I do not desperate to see one-day skirts for men in the street. Who knows, perhaps that with time mentalities will change…”

- Where to find male skirts. Unless we accommodate with mixed models in women clothing store it is not possible at the moment, to get some in the local stores. On the other hand, we can find few models quite male on Internet site.

- The woman and trousers. If nowadays women can wear trousers when they want, it hasn’t been always like that, several decades were necessary before the Society accepts the wearing of trousers by females. Pioneer on the matter, the writer George Sand already went for a walk in trousers in the years 1840, but it was necessary to wait the 1900’s to see other women following her example. Only the rebel women risk themselves there, because they were always taken for homosexual. The First World War made it possible for women workers to wear this cloth. Gradually, women affirmed themselves on the professional plan, social and clothing and after the Second World War; workmen’s jean became fashionable but only as clothing of leisure. In cities, it remains improper. The trousers is feminised only in the Sixties and in 1965, we creates more trousers than skirts. The following year, stylists created the trouser suit for women. Since the Seventies trousers are mixed.
